Professional Carpet Stretching
Extend the Life of Your Carpet
If your carpet appears wrinkled or rippled, it may need to be professionally stretched. Carpet should lay flat and smooth across the entire floor, carpet stretching may be required if your carpet is lumpy, or pulled up around edges of the room. Carpets should have a tucked in appearance around the baseboard, and areas that are not tucked in may need to be stretched and repaired.
Carpet stretching involves pulling the carpet tighter and re-securing it to the tack strips in the subflooring along the perimeter of the room. Carpeting that is professionally installed is typically tightly secured to these strips initially, but with regular wear and tear in high use areas of the room, or if the seams between strips of the carpeting separate, the carpeting may pull away. Carpeting that is loose and needs to be stretched negatively impacts the aesthetic of the room, and may cause safety concerns.
Although carpet stretching may seem like a simple DIY project to tackle on your own, quality repair requires expertise and the right tools for the job. For example, re-seaming carpeting may be all that is required in some cases, or new tacking strips may need to be installed, and a power or knee kicker will be required to pull and stretch the carpet into place on the new tacking strips.
